Highwaymen Exhibit at Sunken Gardens

St. Petersbury, Florida, Nov. 24-25, 2007

Meet several of the original Florida Highwaymen artists at the Florida Memorabilia & Highwaymen Show, being held Saturday, November 24th and Sunday, November 25th, from 10 am to 4 pm, indoors at Sunken Gardens Botanical Park, 1825 Fourth St. N., St. Petersburg. The Florida Highwaymen are a group of 26 African American artists who, in the early 1960's, sold their paintings of Florida waterscapes, backcountry marshes, and inlets from the trunks of their cars while traveling Florida's roads. Those Highwaymen artists who will be exhibiting at the show are James Gibson, Issac Knight, Robert Lewis, and Roy McLendon. On both days, the documentary film "The Highwaymen" by Julia D'Amico, and Jack Hambrick 's critically acclaimed 2002 PBS Highwaymen documentary, "The Highwaymen, Florida's Outsider Artists" will be shown. The public is invited to bring their Highwaymen paintings and other vintage Florida art for a free valuation during the show by a respected dealer in Florida art, Robert LeBlanc. Admission to the show is $6.00; children under 2 years are $3.00. Show admission includes both the Florida Memorabilia and the Highwaymen exhibit/sale, all films including Florida tourism flicks, and lectures. A special combo ticket to include admission to the Gardens is also available. For information, visit www.hulahula.biz or call 727-321-8454.
